Selection Sunday wasn’t supposed to be ‘must see’ TV for the Florida Gators . The defending NCAA champs seemed to be on a collision course for a No. 1 seed, but apparently coach Billy Donovan’s kids like doing things the hard way.
The Gators cruised through their first 11 Southeastern Conference games, until hitting another February funk. They played like a team that had already wrapped up the SEC title on Saturday, losing to West basement dweller LSU, 66-56, in a game that wasn’t as close as the score would indicate. Compounding the felony, the Tigers won easily despite playing without their leading rebounder, Glen Davis.
Donovan may be having flashbacks after the dismal defeat. Florida went through a similar stretch last season, losing three in a row before going on a March tear en route to its first national title.
The Gators look to put the pedal to the metal when they travel to Tennessee on Tuesday and close the regular season with Kentucky, before beginning their defense of the SEC Tournament title.
This isn’t the same Volunteers outfit that Florida dominated on Feb. 3 at home, 94-78. Tennessee played that game without Chris Lofton, who has been battling an ailing ankle. Lofton looked like he was back to 100 percent on Saturday when the Vols turned the corner with their first SEC road win at Arkansas, 83-72.
