133rd Kentucky Derby: Scat Daddy’s identity as a racehorse has yet to be determined

Scat Daddy was regarded as one of the top 2-year-olds in the land prior to the Breeders’ Cup, but failed to make an impact in that race, checking in a non-threatening fourth behind the freakish effort by Street Sense. At one point, Pletcher regarded him as the best 2-year-old in the barn and he is still campaigning him as one of his best from his loaded barn by evidence of running him in the Holy Bull last weekend.

That race was disappointing for the Scat Daddy faithful, as he was out-dueled fair and square by top Kentucky Derby contender Nobiz Like Shobiz and offered no answer to that rival in the stretch. He is a son of Johannesburg and it is very questionable as to how far he wants to run. The one thing he has going for him is that he is a very talented colt and could prove to be one of the best of his generation when he finds his niche. There is some stamina influence in his immediate female family but his identity as a racehorse has yet to be determined.

His declining popularity after last weekend will likely reflect in his odds in Pool 1, as he’ll probably go off at least as high as his 30-1 early price. There are still some things to like about this colt and he reminds a lot of people of another Pletcher 3-year-old that carried the turquoise and white colors of owner James Scatuorchio a few years back in More Than Ready, who was a top class performer at all distances and finished fourth in the millennium renewal of the Run for the Roses. Still think there is a lot of talent here for the price he’ll close at Sunday. There are certainly worse propositions out there.
