Buffalo Man to maintain solid race record for 133rd Kentucky Derby

It was decided by his connections that Buffalo Man will fore go Saturday’s Grade 3 Risen Star at Fair Grounds after drawing the far outside No. 14 post, and instead remain in Florida and run Monday in a restricted stakes event in Ocala at the OBS Day of Champions. Because of that, his backers will have to fall back on his past form, which leaves a lot of guess work due to the fact that he has yet to face a competitive field around two turns – like the Risen Star, which would have likely answered many questions.
Buffalo Man has quietly carved out a solid race record on the east coast and there is some potential attached to this one. Owned in part by Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino, he ran in the Grade 1 Champagne, which proved to be one of the toughest juvenile races of the season, and was never a factor at long odds in a race where no horse effectively closed from far off of the early pace.
His next start was his first around two turns in the Storm Cat Stakes at Meadowlands, and while the race was only a listed event, it proved to be a very important race for Buffalo Man, as he displayed the ability to be more effective over a route of ground and won impressively. He earned an honest 91 Beyer speed figure in the race to close out the year in November. His 3-year-old debut victory in the six-furlong Spectacular Bid was a very good win over a quality field, and he should certainly be suited to longer distances being a son of El Prado out of a Saratoga Six mare that was a route stakes winner herself.
There are several reasons to believe Buffalo Man will continue to improve, but the question will now linger as to whether or not he is good enough to run with the best of his generation. Will be watching Monday with intrigue, but it is tough to endorse him in this pool off his Spectacular Bid win sprinting – or at least it would take a price much higher than his early 30-1 which will likely be available on him. Others have more appeal.
