Circular Quay to fight for 2007 Kentucky Derby

Circular Quay is one of the lower prices in Pool 1, at 15-1.  Everything could change come Saturday, when he runs in the Risen Star (GIII) at the Fair Grounds. He’s the 9-5 favorite in that race, with none of the others less than 9-2, so it’s going to be looked on as a step back if he doesn’t get the job done.

It goes without saying that this race isn’t the primary goal for the Todd Pletcher runner, though. He got a great 2-year-old foundation, never worse than second in five starts.  He was overwhelmed by Street Sense in the Breeders’ Cup, but ran a huge race to be second after getting shuffled back to last of 14 at the break. Only negative might be that he’s yet to win going two turns.

Price is not terribly attractive three months out from the big race, but if he makes it to Louisville, he’ll likely be lower odds then than this go-around.

[...] The trainer’s probable starters and riders are Any Given Saturday (Garrett Gomez), Circular Quay (John Velasquez), Cowtown Cat (Fernando Jara), Scat Daddy (Edgar Prado) and Sam. P. (Ramon Dominguez). If all five run, it would match records set by two Hall of Famers: Wayne Lukas in 1996, and Nick Zito in 2005. [...]
