There will be a playoff atmosphere tonight in a matchup featuring two teams many pundits tabbed as legitimate Stanley Cup threats. Both teams are starting to heat up somewhat with the New York Rangers having won two straight and the Carolina Hurricanes having won three of their last four.

Looking at the numbers, there is a much stronger case for a total play in this game. The Rangers are on 8-3-1 under stretch despite scoring 10 in their last two games. Defensively, the Blue Shirts have been solid allowing just 19 goals in their last 10. The Rangers are also 5-0 under with three or more days rest. Carolina has scored just 21 goals in its last eight and is 4-1 under in its last five on home ice. These two teams haven’t met since spitting home games in November: 4-0 in New York and 2-1 in Carolina. In those games, they were a combined 1-18 on the power play. I’m seeing a defensive struggle here, so we’ll take the under.
