Street Sense instant front-runner for the 2007 Kentucky Derby

Street Sense became an instant front-runner for the Kentucky Derby with his surprising 10-length romp over the best field of 2-year-olds assembled in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile over the same track as the Run for the Roses.
It was the best performance in that prestigious event since Arazi’s memorable 5-length victory in that event over the same track 15 years prior. He earned a gaudy 108 Beyer speed figure for the performance, and it is important to note that the average Kentucky Derby-winning Beyer speed figure from the last 15 renewals is around 109.
Street Sense trained all summer at the Louisville oval for Kentucky Derby-winning conditioner Carl Nafzger, and he should enjoy the Kentucky Derby distance and surface as much as any 3-year-old to make the gate the first Saturday in May, as his sire Street Cry turned in one of the more impressive races run at Churchill Downs in recent history when cruising in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster in 2002. Street Cry was also 2-for-2 at the Kentucky Derby distance of 1¼ miles, which included a stellar victory over his highly regarded stablemate Sakhee earlier that season.
The obvious concern is that he very well could be an underlay in this pool based on one performance, which many believe was greatly enhanced by a substantial rail bias on the Breeders’ Cup program. The positives with him are obvious, but the defining questions one must ask his or herself before investing at odds of 8- to 12-1 three months away from the race are: How good was his Breeders’ Cup effort and can he repeat it? …and, Is taking 8- to 12-1 at this point a ‘value’ on him in when factoring in the chances he makes into the starting gate that day and what his price will be live at the racetrack? Well, what is your answer?

[...] Can Street Sense come close to his resounding triumph in the 22nd BC Juvenile at Churchill Downs? That jinx goes back even further: No juvenile champion since Spectacular Bid in ’79 has accomplished the feat. That was during a glorious decade of racing when half-dozen winners of the Eclipse Award for 2-year-olds captured The Derby. Three of those took the Triple Crown: Affirmed, ’78; Seattle Slew, ’77; and Secretariat, ’73. [...]
