Kansas (11-1) vs. Virginia Tech (11-2). SBG Global Opening Line: Virginia Tech - 3.5 , Total 53.5
A matchup of great offense versus great defense will occur on Thursday night in the Orange Bowl as Kansas faces Virginia Tech. The Hokies have the second ranked scoring defense in the nation, allowing 15.5 points per game while Kansas has the second ranked offense scoring 44.3 points per game. SBG Global reports that early college football betting has the public taking Virginia Tech at Home.
Kansas is led by quarterback Todd Reesing, who passed for over 3,000 yards with 32 touchdowns and only six interceptions. “We’re not a bunch of superstars on this team. We’re just a bunch of regular guys who love to play football,” Reesing said. “That’s how we like it. We’d rather have 22 guys that no one’s ever heard of that are winning every ballgame than a few superstars that everyone focuses on.” Kansas had three receivers who caught at least four touchdowns and had 400 yards. They also had two running backs that combined for 23 TD’s this season. Brandon McAnderson and Jake Sharp each averaged over five yards per carry. “Very scary,” Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. “You guys talk about them offensively, but it looks to me like they’re very good defensively also. Certainly, they’ve had a great year and we’ll try to uphold our end of the deal to have a great game for the Orange Bowl. It has the makings of that.” Virginia Tech will be taking on a Kansas defense that ranks fifth in scoring defense with just 16 points allowed per game.
SBG Global Current Line: Virginia Tech - 3 , Total 52
Virginia Tech is led by a superb defense. They have scored more defensive and special teams touchdowns than any other team over the past two decades. The Hokies returned an interception for a touchdown against Boston College, and also blocked two kicks and an extra point. The Hokies are third in the nation with 43 sacks and tied for fifth with 21 interceptions, returning five for touchdowns. On special teams, Virginia Tech has returned two punts and one kickoff for scores.
Kansas was the best team in the nation this year against the pointspread. They went a spectacular 10-1. Virginia Tech went 7-5. The Hokies covered the spread in six of their last seven games. Virginia Tech has scored at least 30 points in each of their last four games. Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor give the Hokies different options. “They are a very fine team. Frank Beamer has done a fantastic job,” Kansas head coach Mark Mangino said. “We have a lot of respect for them. They play great defense, great special teams and are opportunistic on offense. Virginia Tech could make a case for playing in the BCS national championship game.”
This marks the third bowl game for the Jayhawks under head coach Mark Mangino and their first BCS bowl berth. Virginia Tech is playing in their 15th straight bowl game and fourth BCS bowl game overall. There are two players that could be key for Virginia Tech. Running back Branden Ore will not play in the first quarter due to suspension. Ore has rushed for 876 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns this season. Virginia Tech might also be without linebacker Vince Hall, who hurt his left knee during an outing at the beach earlier this week and is listed as questionable. Hall is second on the team with 92 tackles. “We are concerned,” Beamer said. “It was a little tender (Monday). The way I understand it, it’s going to be Vince’s decision whether he can go or not.”
